Window film specifications

VLT, TSER and IRR Explained

Four numbers decide whether a film is worth its price. Only one of them is visible.

Two films can look identical on a car and reject completely different amounts of heat. This page uses the 83 models LogicFilms publishes with a full specification line to show where the real differences sit, and which number a distributor should actually compare.

The four numbers

What each specification actually describes.

VLT

Visible light transmission

The percentage of visible light passing through. This is the shade your customer chooses and often the figure local regulations refer to. It says nothing about heat.

UVR

Ultraviolet rejection

Ultraviolet energy blocked. Across every nano ceramic series in this catalog it sits at 99 per cent or above, so it rarely separates two ceramic films. It does separate ceramic from entry dyed film.

TSER

Total solar energy rejected

Visible, infrared and ultraviolet energy rejected together. This is the closest single figure to the heat a customer will feel, and the one to compare at a matched VLT.

IRR

Infrared rejection

Near-infrared energy blocked at a stated wavelength. Quoted alone it is the easiest number to present favourably, because a supplier can choose the wavelength that flatters the film.

Same shade, different film

Around 70 per cent VLT, two films that look alike differ by 38 points of TSER.

Each pair below is drawn from our own published catalog at a matched visible light transmission. The shade a customer sees is the same. The heat rejection, and the price, are not.

The infrared trap

One wavelength can move a film by 40 points.

Near-infrared heat is spread across a band. A film can perform strongly at 950nm and much less well at 1400nm. A supplier quoting one infrared figure, without saying which wavelength it came from, is giving you a number you cannot compare.

Worked example 75.0% at 950nm

The Matte model in the Building Reflection series measures 75.0% infrared rejection at 950nm.

Same model 35.2% at 1400nm

At 1400nm the same model rejects less than half as much. Quoted alone, the first figure would badly overstate it.

What to ask Both wavelengths

Ask any supplier for infrared rejection at 950nm and 1400nm, plus TSER. If only one number exists, treat it as marketing.

Why we publish both It is comparable

Every fully specified model in our catalog lists both wavelengths, so a distributor can answer an installer without guessing.

Before you order

Five questions that separate a real quotation from a brochure.

01

At which VLT?

Ask for the full specification at the shade you sell in volume, not the headline figure from the series best row.

02

Which infrared wavelength?

A single IR figure without a wavelength cannot be compared between two suppliers.

03

Specification or measurement?

A series specification and a measured sample are different claims. Both are useful; presenting one as the other is not.

04

Certified by whom?

An instrument photograph is evidence of one reading. A third-party report names the laboratory, method and date. Ask which one you are being shown.

05

Which batch does it cover?

Ask whether the figures describe the sample you received, the production batch, or the series in general.

06

What changes at volume?

Confirm whether the quoted price tier, roll format and packaging still apply at the quantity you plan to order.

FAQ

Buyer questions.

Is TSER or IRR the better number to compare window film?

Total solar energy rejected is the closer figure to the heat a customer feels, because it accounts for visible, infrared and ultraviolet energy together. Infrared rejection describes only part of the spectrum and depends on the wavelength quoted, so it is supporting detail rather than the headline comparison.

Why do suppliers quote infrared rejection at 950nm?

Many films perform better at 950nm than at longer near-infrared wavelengths, so a single figure taken at 950nm can look stronger than the film's overall heat performance. Asking for 950nm and 1400nm together removes that ambiguity.

Two films have the same VLT. Why is one three times the price?

Visible light transmission only describes the shade. In our own catalog, models at around 70 per cent VLT range from 23 per cent to 61 per cent total solar energy rejected, at prices from $1.50 to $5.50 per metre. The shade is identical; the heat rejection is not.

Does high UV rejection mean a film blocks heat?

No. Ultraviolet is a small part of the solar energy reaching glass. Entry dyed film in this catalog can reach high ultraviolet rejection at dark shades while still rejecting comparatively little total solar energy.

Can I get a sample to verify these numbers?

Yes. The sample book is free and buyers cover international courier shipping. The quality control page also shows an instrument photograph for one identified sample, alongside a note on what that photograph does and does not prove.
